| Project Title: | Translational genomics for drought resistance improvement in crop plants |
| Abstract of Project : | |
| Drought is a serious constraint in the production of world's five principal cereals – maize, rice, wheat, pearl millet and sorghum. Developing drought tolerant cultivars is important especially in rice and wheat. Genomic approaches have identified quantitative trait loci for drought resistance in these crops. For my Fulbright project I will identify breeding targets for drought adaptation in rice and wheat using translational genomics. In addition, using metanalysis, my project will determine true loci for drought adaptation specific to rice and wheat for application in marker assisted breeding of resilient cultivars. Comparative genomics will discover quantitative trait loci for drought resistance in complex genomes (wheat and maize) from smaller genomes (rice and sorghum), enabling transfer of best alleles between species. | |
